The Arriva bus company is seeking entries to its photography competition. Submitted pictures will explore the role of public transport at work in the community and your local area. Prizes include a Sony digital SLR camera, and vouchers from a well-known UK photography chain. All winners will have their photo published on the company website. Deadline: 31st July 2011. Network Rail trains has a photography competition, inviting pictures of… “Britain’s beautiful rural and urban scenery”. The top prize is £10,000. Deadline: 15th July 2011. The 2010 winning ‘Lines in the Landscape’ picture was of a local scene, showing a speeding train going through Grindleford station in the Peak District.

Birmingham Loves Photographers is a new website profiling local photographers, and they mention plans to… “run events for photography around the West Midlands” in future.

Bilston Craft Gallery, located down in the Black Country, is seeking Midlands crafts makers working in ceramics, metal, glass, enamel or leather. The planned exhibition called ‘Craftsense’ will celebrate the links between local historic manufacturing skill and modern craft practices, with a special focus on famous Staffordshire and Black Country trades such as metal shaping, ceramics, leather, glass, and enamel. Wolverhampton’s Kirkland’s New Empire Bioscope is seeking artists working in film/animation, to submit recent work or proposals that will be shown as part of a moving image and visual art event. Kirkland’s New Empire Bioscope is a home cinema experience set within an ex-industrial unit, temporarily transformed into a classic British Edwardian ‘fleapit’ cinema. Seen the light? The Crafts Council’s unusual Lux Craft competition invites applications from new and established crafts makers working in all disciplines, to submit proposals for installations which capture the beauty of light. Works submitted for selection can either include light-emitting sources such as lamps, or be conceived to celebrate the beauty of forms and surface finishes when lit. Deadline: 7th June 2011.
