Stoke-on-Trent’s Stoke Your Fires film festival is now open to submissions for its award programme. “All films need to be less than 30 minutes in length and must have been created after 1st December 2011 to be eligible.” Entry is free, and the deadline for submissions is 3rd December 2012. A new North Staffordshire Business Investor Network launches on 9th October 2012 (5.30pm-7pm) at Beswicks Solicitors, Festival Park, Stoke-on-Trent. The network will provide… “an independent service for our local accountants, solicitors and consultants to market their clients who have equity, expertise and finance to trade, North Staffordshire wide.”

Local historian and writer Fred Hughes has published a biography of Sir Barnett Stross, Roses from Ashes. The book is available to purchase from Potteries Museum and Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent, and shortly from major booksellers and Amazon.

Poet Simon Armitage will give a charity reading at Keele University. His acclaimed translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight adapted a tale set in the Staffordshire Moorlands, and he is a leading national poet. The reading will take place on 17th October 2012, at 7.30pm, in the Westminster Theatre in the Chancellor’s Building at Keele. Tickets are £5 each (£2.50 concessions) and can be bought from the Chancellor’s Building reception Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, or by telephone from:  01782 734127.

TV documentary makers are looking for anyone who worked at the Wedgwood factory before 1960, for a new documentary made with the eminent historian and writer A.N. Wilson, who grew up on the Potteries and who has just published a new novel set here. The programme makers are specifically looking for anyone who worked with A.N. The Bodley Head / Financial Times Essay Prize aims to attract the best young talent in long-form essay writing. Open to writers aged 18 to 35, the competition prize is £1,000. Winners will also have an e-publication with Bodley Head, and a mentoring session with a Bodley Head or a FT writer.

An interesting new AHRC film on 3D printing from ‘virtual’ digital models, in ceramics. The project developed… “new methods of creating ceramics using 3D printing technology and worked with Denby Potteries [Derbyshire] to test designs and develop prototype models in ceramics.”
