Keele Launchpad is a new free 2-day business “start-up bootcamp” set for 7th and 8th August 2013, on the Keele University Campus. It’s open to graduates who are interested in starting their own business, or creating a hobby business that might grow in time. Attendees will…

“learn about different business models, tax requirements, legal contracts, marketing, e-commerce, social media and sales from industry experts… and you could make some great contacts.”

The government has announced it will extend the Start-up Loans scheme to the over-30s, by the… “end of the summer”. The scheme offers a five-year low-interest loan of £2,500.

There’s to be a North West Women’s Enterprise Day 2013 on 15th November 2013. The location will be Cranage Hall, about ten miles north of Stoke-on-Trent. Last year there were apparently about 250 attendees, so it could be useful for local networking.

Job: Appetite, the new £3m three-year Arts Council funded programme in Stoke-on-Trent, is recruiting for a part-time Get Talking Researcher to be based at The Creative Communities Unit in Staffordshire University (Stoke campus). Graduates only. Closing date: 22nd May 2013 (today!).

Local map-makers will be interested to know that The Society of Cartographers annual conference and summer school will be in Stoke-on-Trent on the 2nd-4th September 2013. There will be a number of Stoke & Staffordshire -specific mapping talks on the programme, plus a map illustrator’s surgery. The timing of this complements the international OpenStreetMap convention, a global gathering of grassroots open access map-makers which is being held in Birmingham on 6th-8th September 2013.

Game and toy designers interested in making new board-games have a perfect opportunity to do informal research in Stoke-on-Trent, at the UK’s annual national board-game players convention The Cast Are Dice 2013.

Staffordshire University is now offering “KEEN for Export” placements, aimed at helping SME’s to develop export capability. A graduate is employed within the business, supported by an academic expert at Staffordshire University. The Knowledge Exchange and Enterprise Network (KEEN) will generate…

Arts Council England now has a new £500,000 fund which for the first time will help… “indie rock bands and cutting-edge dance musicians”, via 75 grants of between £5,000 to £15,000.

Cre8 Radio is now broadcasting to Stoke-on-Trent on FM.

Nearby Buxton in the Peak District is running a Buxton Poetry Competition, in co-ordination with Buxton Festival. The theme is “History & Heritage” and the deadline for work is 8th April 2013. Full details of cash prizes and categories are at the competition website. There doesn’t appear to be a limitation on where entrants live.

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and Birmingham’s universities will launch the second “Birmingham Made Me” design expo in Birmingham on 6th June 2013. Despite its title the expo’s press information rather hopefully says that it’s… “a celebration of Midlands design” — although someone from Stoke-on-Trent who attended last year reports that it was very strongly Birmingham-focused. As part of the Expo, on the morning of the 6th… “Midlands business leaders will consider ways to boost economic growth by drawing on creativity and design-driven innovation.” Tickets are still available.

To celebrate its 160th birthday, the Skipton Building Society has launched a new community funding programme, Grassroots Giving. This will offer 160 donations of £500 to community groups across the country, groups which do not have access to other funds. Application deadline: 31th July 2013.
