Added to the Directory:  The curators of the Electric Picture House at Congleton are to have their premiere opening night on Friday 20th April 2012, to officially open this new cluster of nine studio spaces, and a group workshop and arts exhibition space in Congleton (just to the north of Stoke-on-Trent). The venue will thereafter be open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5pm (closed Sundays).

There is to be a free traditional country crafts Hurdle Making workshop at Hem Heath Nature Reserve (on the edge of Stoke-on-Trent between Wedgewood at Barlaston and the Trentham Lakes industrial estate). The date is Sunday 15th April 2012 (10am-3pm). Hurdles are traditional rustic fencing made out of woven willow or hazel withies. Places are limited, so booking is essential. On 30th May 2012 the Olympic Torch passes through Stoke-on-Trent on its way to the 2012 London Olympic Games opening ceremony. As part of this event there will be a parade through the city centre, co-ordinated by B Arts and Stoke City Council. To make the parade memorable they need flag makers and people who can use a sewing machine, and who are based in North Staffordshire. There will be an open audition on Saturday 17th March 2012 to recruit a team of flag makers. No previous experience in flag making is needed, but machine sewing will be an essential skill. Successful applicants will work with Wendy Meadley for five days Monday 23rd to Friday 27th April 2012 inclusive, and also on the day itself on Wednesday 30th May. Interested? A new Director at the British Council has reportedly restored culture to the heart of the Council’s activities, after it languished for many years under Labour. As part of the new policy there is a new Artists International Development Fund, a three-year programme to financially support English artists to travel the world. Administered by the Arts Council, it’s now open for applications, and will provide grants of between £1,000 and £5,000 to artists…

“to travel and collaborate internationally while carrying out professional projects”. The money will be given to artists who have so far… “carried out little or no work abroad, but who wish to capitalise on domestic success.”
